Benzenesulfonic acid, 2,2'-[(9,10-dihydro-5,8-dihydroxy-9,10-dioxo-1,4-anthracenediyl)diimino]bis[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-, disodium salt (ADIBSS)

CAS Registry Number 83006-67-1

What is it?

  • ADIBSS is a man-made dye.

How is it used?

  • ADIBSS is a dye that is used in the pigment/dye/printing ink industry sectors.
  • Based on the most recent data available, ADIBSS is not in commerce in Canada.

Why did the Government of Canada assess It?

  • ADIBSS was identified as a potential concern to the environment based on available information regarding possible persistence, accumulation and potential to cause harm to the environment.

What is the Government of Canada doing?

  • The Government of Canada has conducted an evaluation of ADIBSS based on science, called a screening assessment.
  • The evaluation showed that ADIBSS can stay in the environment for a long time. It can build up in the bodies of animals or within the food chain and small amounts of ADIBSS can harm animals or plants that live in water.
  • However, the Government of Canada has reviewed information that indicates that ADIBSS is not currently in commerce in Canada in significant quantities.
  • As a result, it is unlikely that ADIBSS is entering the environment as a result of commercial manufacture or use in this country.
  • The Government of Canada has implemented a Significant New Activity or SNAc provision for ADIBSS since it has the potential to cause harm in the environment. This requires that any proposed new uses of ADIBSS must be reassessed prior to the substance being manufactured in or brought into Canada.
  • The final screening assessment report was published on January 31, 2009.
